Dover Admiralty Pier 17th Jan.1999

Paul Davies and myself, had hopes of going to the Breakwater, to fish for Cod... the Met.Office had other ideas, and gave a forecast of SW winds from force 5/6, occasionally 7 ... as a result, the Motorboats would not be going across, and Paul and I had to decide upon an alternative. We had been told that Princes Parade in Hythe was fishing well, but the prospect of force 7 winds, straight in out faces, and cutting down our effective casting range, did not appeal...... however, with a 6.3m tide at 11am, the Ad. pier seemed a good bet.....  this was however to be one of those days, that proves there is no such thing as a sure fire bet, nor indeed that the fish read the manuals!!!!!!  :-(

We went to Bills Bait and Tackle and collected our lug, and then hot footed it down to Channel Angling to grab out supply of rag ..... when we drove around to the Ad.Pier, there were many lorries and trailers parked  in the surrounding area, their ferry crossings having been delayed by the bad weather, we did however manage to find a parking space close to the entrance ..... which reminds me, the old car park by the railway sidings, has now been closed, so all parking (limited to say the least) is now restricted to the road.

Set-up around 8.30am, on the western section next to the gun turret. I set up a 4/0 wishbone, and a 2/0:4/0 pennell, both to be loaded up with worm baits ... Paul did likewise.... our quest was for Cod ...... the reality however.......

9.10am: Paul with a 7" pouting......

9.40am: Imanage a 7" pouting as well.....

12.40am:.....  I catcha new species for the day .. a five bearded rockling .. all 7" of it!!!!!!!

1.40am: Both Paul and myself reel-in.... and both have an 8' pouting......

2.40am .... I land another pout .. this time of 9".....

3.30am ... time to pack up, as the pier closes at 4pm on a Sunday...... although we had a bad time, many people that we spoke to had blanked .. only one report of a sizable codling, and that had been lost whilst trying to land it  .. the chap had been fishing for flounders with size 2 hooks!!!!!
