Dover Breakwater 7th Nov 1999

Drove down to Marsh Tackle and had a chat with Dave, who was waiting for the diggers to arrive. Collected my 5 score of lugworm and a pack of small squid, and drove to Dover.

Arrived at Dover around 8am and went straight to the Dump-head .... being late ment that I had to catch one of the later Boats across, with 40 plus anglers in front of me!!

Made my way down the Breakwater and set-up around Peg 60.
The wind was lighter than I’d expected NW / W force 2/3 rather than the force 4/5 forecast .. may be due to the sheltered nature of Dover behind the Cliffs.....
High water was due at 10.34 with a 6.7m tide.
Set up two rods .. one on the outside with a 2/0 wishbone loaded with yellowtail and squid...

and the other with smaller hooks to catch small pouting that I could then put down the wall on a 3/0 : 6/0 pennel for Bass.
Started fishing just before 9.30am........

9.50am ... first fish of the day .... an 11” pout from the outside.......

10.20am .. another pouting, this time larger at 14” and weighing in at 1.1/4lb

10.30am .. finally caught a small 6” pouting to use down the inside wall ... I’d forgotten to bring my railing brace to put the rod out horizontal, so I was forced to fish the pout closer to the wall than I would have liked.....
10.50am Another 11” pout from the outside, plus a couple of sets of tackle.....

Other people seemed to be catching mainly pouting, with the odd dogfish here and there.....

11.15am .. 12” pouting from the outside.....
11.45am ... guess what? .. another 12” pout from the outside.....
12.00 noon .... 14” pout from the outside.....

Chap next to me who had brought his railing brace, was fishing a Christmas tree rig for pollack .. and he had managed to catch a few by this time plus a single scad....

12.30pm .. 13” pout from the outside.....
1.00pm .... 11” pout from the outside....
I’d decided to give up on the livebaiting down the wall .... and promptly caught a 6” pouting on the inside!!!
1.20pm .. got snagged on the outside, which resulted in a set of lost tackle ... restrung the rod, and started fishing again, using both rods on the outside....

Chap next to me, pulled up a tompot blenny and a small wrasse from the inside wall.... later he caught a nice wrasse, well over 1lb....

Others had caught a few whiting ... Tom had a couple of nice fish that looked to be 1lb plus.
Few codling here and there .. with a 3lb in the Knuckle, and one that was estimated to be 5lb plus, that was lost as it was being brought to the drop-net!! :-(

1.35 .. double shot of pouting, both 11”.....
1.50pm 14” pouting from the outside.....
2.20pm .... 10” pouting from the outside.....
2.30pm ... another 10” pouting.........
2.50pm .... 9” pouting, followed by another 15minutes later!!!
3.25pm .. double shot of pouting of 10 and 11 inches....

3.35pm .. start packing up and bring in the last rod .. with another double shot of pouting .. this time 9.5” and 10.5”....

Caught the boat back to the car around 4.15pm ...........
