FOLKESTONE

Tackle Shops:

Folkestone Pier 22-Aug-97

Started fishing (Tony, Karen and myself) around 7pm on the Elbow, very few others fishing the pier (max 6). Caught 15 odd mackerel (for bait and my mums freezer) between 7-8.30pm on feathers, best of which was 1lb . Fished with ledgers (2 hooks (sizes 2 to 2/O)) after that using a variety of baits: Blow lug, black lug, crab, clam, and mackerel. Number of small pout and a silver eel, all under size.

Tried fishing down the wall, but nothing doing... no pout at all. As a result decided that it would be worth setting up for Bass down the wall with free lined live pout and mackerel strips around 10pm. The Chaps fishing next to us had the same idea (sorry I didn't get your names) using dead pout on a fixed leger with 5/0 hooks on a Pennell rig. Bang..... after some hard work and a little help from Tony with their drop net, they had one lovely 6lb Bass. I can safely say that the three of us looked on with envy in our eyes!!!!

The tidal run soon kicked in and fishing down the wall was a non-starter. Fishing out also started to drop off with just the occasional small pout. Managed to slice the top of my finger open with the filleting knife.... thanks to the Bass Man for the insulation tape and the bandaging. Decided to call it a night around 2.30 am ,too much weed, crabs and tidal run.

Folkestone Rotunda Beach 23-Aug-97

After the previous night and with a fishing comp. on the pier, we (Tony, Karen, and myself) decided that we would fish beside the pier behind the Pilot house for Bass.

Set up around 7.30pm or so. Left Karen and Tony to feather for mackerel (for bait / Karen's freezer). That afternoon I had just bought 2 matching pike rods from a friend of Tony's to replace a carp rod I'ed snapped the previous week at West Bexington (but that's another story). Put on the ABU 6500CT with 18lb line (forgot to bring the small mitchell 300) with a 25g silver Krillette and cast out from the jetty/rocks at the side of the pier. First cast ...over -run.... the rocket is not really at it's best with such light weight!!!! Second cast... Bang.... its a Bass.... played it in, and with some great work by Tony on the small beach below landed the 4lb fish. Great way to Christen a new rod!!!!!

Feathering produced no Mackerel, and nothing further on the lure over the next 45 mins. Started to get dark so we fished for small pout (to live bait with if we'ed managed to catch any!!!) and maybe sole, along with short range tackle for bass using the same baits as the previous night. I have to say it was dead out there apart from a few missed pout bites, although they could easily just have been the crabs at play!!!!. Gave up around 1am....

Folkestone Rotunda Beach 26-Aug-97

Returned to the Pilot house spot in order to spin for Bass with Tony. Started around 4.30pm but due to a number of children diving off the Old Jetty, had to fish some distance down....... No Bass, but Tony did have a few small Mackerel. Once the Kids had moved off around 6.30pm , we moved over to the Jetty area...... had what may have been a small bass, but after 5mins or so, lost it in the rocks at the side of the pier!!!!! Nothing until around 7.30pm or so when a large shoal of mackerel turned up chasing whitebait...... the sea was boiling with both predator and prey leaping out of the surf, at times the mackerel were no more than an arms length away..... changed the spinners for feathers...... you sure know when you've got 4 mackerel plus on a pike rod and 8lb line!!!!!! Tony and myself collected around 20 mackerel for the pot, and left the rest to dance their way off into the sunset........

Folkestone Warren 29-Aug-97

Arrived around 5pm (Tony, Karen and myself), tried a little bit of spinning and some casting practice, started pulling-up small wispy green weeds, blown up by the winds (force 5/6) the previous two days.

Tide forced us up from the beach, and onto the concrete apron where we started to fish in the hope for Bass. Tony had a good sized pouting first cast..... then everything started going pear shaped!!!!.

The small green fillamentous weed changed very rapidly into vast amounts of brown Laminaria etc. concentrating in a band about 20ft from the waters edge. The wind was about force 3/4 blowing parallel to the beach and with the washing -line situation with the weed, dragged the tackle (single hook 2/0 - 4/0, 170g Breakaway, baited with either: crab, clam/black lug, mackerel) inshore. This venue is somewhat snagy, made more so by the small post groins running out at 90 degrees!!!!.

All of which resulted in the loss of three sets of tackle very quickly. Had to make the rather sad decision that it was not really fishable..... felt that we could continue, but if we hooked a decent fish, there was a 90% plus chance of losing it in the weed dominated surf. Crying shame really, water was coloured, fish were feeding, conditions ideal.... save for the WEED!!!!!!!!

Some people were fishing, but I've no idea how they got on.

Looked at Folkestone beach but the story was much the same, and decided not to waste the crabs...... went to the Lifeboat Pub to drown our sorrows............

Drove back to London at 11pm (no beer for me), and the rain started falling very heavily just outside Folkestone.... Think things may have turned out for the best after all!!!!

Folkestone Rotunda Beach/Mermaid Point 9-Sept.-97

Really nice day, hot and sunny, and very little wind. Started spinning for bass by myself around 4pm, using the pike rod, and a variety of plugs and spinners as I walked from the Rotunda to Mermaid point.

This part of the beach between Folkestone and Sandgate has undergone development in terms of coastal defense work around three years ago or so, and would seem to still be in the process of adjustment, at least as far as the fishing goes (sure someone will tell me otherwise).... but we thought we'd give it a whorl...

Tony joined me around 5.30pm at Mermaid Point...... but we had no joy at all.... so what's new!!!!!!!!! Decided to walk back towards Folkestone pier in the hope of that illusive bass, or maybe swap rapidly to feathers if any mackerel showed.... what did show was a */**** !!!! Trawler no more than 100 yds out..... sometimes I really could do some serious bodily damage.... it really gets under my skin..... anyway enough of the ranting and raving..... end result by 7.45pm when it was getting really rather dark..... NO FISH!!!

Folkestone Warren 10-Sept.1997

Started fishing with Tony on the first apron around 4pm. Decided that the Warren would be a better bet to spin/plug for Bass than the Rotunda Beach area that we'd tried the day before.

The reasoning behind this was simple.... with the greater amount of rocks and weeds in the Warren, the Bass would potentially patrol shorter areas, whereas the more open beaches to the West of Folkestone Pier could well mean pot luck if you just happened to be in the right place when the Bass cruised by.....

Tony started off by using float tackle with a strip of mackerel..... he felt that as with the day before, the weather conditions would suit not only Bass, but also Garfish, and now being in the Warren maybe the chance of pollack. I decided to use an ABU jointed Hi/Lo coupled with the pike rod and Mitchell 300.

Got past the first Apron, and I decided to change lures.... Bass Bullet rather than the Hi/Lo....... Got tangled up with a miss cast, when Tony gave a shout.... a large bass (2.5 ft in length or so) was cruising just under our rod tips..... by the time I'd sorted out the tangle, the fish was gone. Four or five casts later however (around 5pm), the rod was bending....... small school bass.... weighed in at just under 2lb, photographed and put back for another day.

Tony swapped over to a silver Toby.... stayed for about 20 minutes or so, but nothing more. Decided to walk on up to the Nags Head (second high apron)... quite a lot of weed floating about (25 feet out or so) slowed things down.... Tony got snagged and lost the Toby. Changed over to a weighted RedGill (yellow)..... lost that as well but continued with the tactic. After a while decided to return to the first apron area.....'

After about 4 casts (6pm).. Tony gave a shout that he was in..... jumped down to the lower section to land the fish...... again a Bass of just under 2lb, photographed and returned. Gave it another hour or so, but no more fish, the wind started to pick-up, light fading, and Tony lost another set of tackle..... called it a day, but a very rewarding one.....

Folkestone Warren 14-Sept.1997

Got-up rather early to drive down to Folkestone to be fishing at 6am around sun-rise and the rising tide(high water around 8am)!!!!! Karen and myself decided to use Pike rods, 15lb line, and a variety of lures.

Karen elected to use a Bass Bullet, whilst I chopped and changed between the ABU HI/LO, a redgill with bubble float, silver krillete, and a green and yellow toby.

Turned into a really nice day, with very little wind, although it was slowly increasing. Around 7am, Karen gave a shout.... a small bass had risen and snapped at the bullet, no more than 12ft away, however it failed to connect!!!!!

Half an hour later something snatched at my toby, but again failed to properly connect, but it felt like a good size fish.

Around 8am and still using the green and yellow toby, something struck home, and how, about 20ft out.... called over to Karen to lend a hand if she could.... played the fish, and brought it to the surface..... a lovely large Bass.....

Then the realisation of the situation struck us...... we're fishing on the concrete apron, the tide has risen, there's a drop of 6ft or so, and the swell is washing over the 3 very narrow slime covered steps between us and the fish...... what had we not brought with us..... NO LANDING NET, NO GAFF!!!!!!!!!ÞDecided the only thing to do was for Karen to hold the rod, whilst I lay face down on the concrete and carefully handline it up....... up it came, my fingers just starting to slip under its gills..... PING..... the line snaps (must have been weakened over the rocks), bass with lure still attached fall to the second step, make a diving lunge for it .... swell comes in at the sametime...... off swims what we estimate was 8lb of prime Bass....... To say that I was not very happy, could be said to be an understatement.

You choose the right time, right place, right tactics, apply the right technique, hook the dream fish, play the fish, beat the fish, touch the fish..... and loose it!!!!!!!!! Gut wrenching sinking feeling, and all for the price of a landing net...... It's a very hard pill to take but the lesson has been learnt..... I've just purchased a landing net, and a drop net today (15-9-97)..... I never want to experience that feeling again if it's humanly possible.

Nothing else occurred, apart from losing two krillete lures, and we left around 11am..... would have gone sooner with the sun being so high, but lunch at my Mums was not until 12 noon.

**UPDATE: Just as we were leaving, a friend of Tonys came down armed with carp rod and sinking plug..... Tony now tells me that he went up to the Nags Head area, and landed a 7lb Bass....... just hope it didn't have a fire tiger coloured toby in it's mouth!!!!!!

Folkestone Warren / Rotunda Beach 16-Sept.1997

Went down to fish about 4pm by myself, to try out a variety of new rapalas that I'ed just got my hands on...... couldn't do much as it was a big low tide (Warren is really a Mid to High water mark for spinning), and with a lot of floating weed. However it did give me the opportunity to see what we were fishing over, and to identify some other possible locations to try when the conditions were more favourable.

Around 5.30pm went off to the Rotunda Beach and walked towards the Pier, flicking out the Rapalas as I went..... Tried around the base of the pier, but was hampered by the rocks and weed...... no joy...... left for Kingston around 7.30pm...

Folkestone Warren 24-Sept.1997

Started fishing around 3pm at the far end of the second apron with Karen. Wind was around force 4, rising tide (High around 5pm), with a fair bit of weed in the water......

Both of use were using Pike rods and spinning reels. Karen decided to use a Rattln Rapala (gold), whilst I chopped and changed between a weighted redgill, J14 (blue/silver) Rapala, and a Rattlin Rapala (fire tiger)....... I also decided to try out some braid line, which took a little getting used to, but I liked it, although it knotted a few times around the reel on casting (but thats just something for me to look for before I snap the bail arm across.... if caught in time no problem..if not then....).

By 4pm the tide had risen enough to fish the Nags Head end........ after only a few casts using the Rattlin Rapala (fire tiger).. I was in.... Karren came over with the landing net, and almost fell in..... as luck would have it just on her Bum, but ooh so close to going in...... anyway  managed to land a small Bass, photographed, weighed in at 1lb, and returned......

Karren changed over to the fire tiger coloured rattlin rapala, whilst I tried with the redgill........ no joy for either of us..... decided to try around the first apron.... met a chap float fishing for Bass....... saw large shouls of small school Bass come to the surface after white bait a number of times, but for us no more fish... left around 6.30pm to get back to London to meet some evening students at the University..... nice to go back to work at 8.30pm!!!!!!!!

Folkestone Warren 25-Sept.1997

Started fishing on my own, at the second Apron around 3pm, using a wieghted Redgill (purple), across the sandy slip area at the east end...... wind around force 4 (force 5 at times ..... not the best for spinning!!!!), rising tide (high water around 6pm), lots of weed.....

Around 4.30pm caught a small bass of around 12" or so, photographed and returned....... give it 10 years, and then.....

Moved Westwards towards the Nags head..... lost 2 redgills and a Countdown Rapala..... sure those nice people at Harris will let me buy some more!!!!!

Moved down to the first Apron around 6pm........ lost 2 small fish on Redgill, and had another leap out of the water, as I lifted the redgill out, under my rod tip!!!!!!!!!

School Bass chasing bait fish so I changed over to a J9 Rapala (black /silver)....... hooked and lost a fish of about a pound.....

With the fading light I changed again to an HJ-14 (silver/blue)...... second cast an I'm in....... nice chap called Geff gave me a hand with the landing net (he almost went into the drink, when a rather large wave crashed at our feet...).... weighed in at 1 and 1/4 lb, photographed and returned for another time.........

A few more hits but no connections (you can rally feel everything using the braided line)..... left around 7.30...... poor light stops play!!!!!!!

**** Geff had been fishing with us the day before using float tackle, and had continued after dark, using lug on the bottom......  had a number of pout, and a codling of 1.5lb.....

Folkestone Warren: 27-Sept.1997

Up at 4am to fish at 6.30am.... just Karen and myself...... kept on telling Karen it was a good idea, that it's the early bird that gets the Bass (or something similar)... I regret to say that her reply was not very ladylike.... but she came along anyway.....

Started at the first apron using a variety or Rapalas... J13 (blue/white) (silver), Rattlin (fire tiger) (gold), HJ-14 (silver/blue), and a weighted purple Redgill.....

Rising water, with high tide at about 8.30am, wind was stronger than I expected..... gusting to around force 4 from the East, rather than the force 3 or less that I was expecting... made life interesting!!!!!!!!

Geff came along with his float gear around 7.30am, by which time we'd seen nothing...... Geff informed us that he'd had 3 school bass the night before around dusk, and a chap from Dover who was also float fishing took a 3lb'er...... not sure what the chap from Dover was using but Geff was using lug..... having seen large bass cruise up and down the apron wall, I would think that live floated prawn to a depth of around 4 to 6 ft would be the way to go..... I think if I can get hold of some live prawns I shall give it a go, but it's rather hard being 80 odd miles from the venue..... I shall have to have words with Tony and see what he thinks...

Anyway, moved off to the Nags Head around 7-45am..... second cast and bang, I'm in...... something sure liked the J13 (blue/white).... five minutes later, and with help from Karen with the landing net, a nice 3 and 1/2 lb Bass.. photographed and kept for the pot......

8.10am using the Rattlin Rapala (fire tiger), a small bass of around 12" snapped at it just as I'm lifting it out of the water.... photographed and returned......

Changed over to the HJ-14..... 8.30am and I'm into my third fish..... landed, weighed in at 1 and 3/4 lb, photographed and returned..... By this time Karen was convinced there was a conspiracy against her even though she was using the same equipment and lures as myself..... claims that Bass hate her and that Cods a much nicer fish!!!!!!!

Returned to the first apron, but no joy, despite seeing a large bass cruising up and down the apron wall again.... oh for some live prawns!!!!!!!

Packed up around 10am....... went to fish the Beach below the Pier..... no go, they are demolishing the old slip way and platform and fencing it off..... not very happy at loosing one of my favorite bass spots...... flicked a J13 along the Rotunda beach up to Mermaid point and back, but it was rather late in the day, and nothing doing....... left for Kingston at Mid-Day.....

Folkestone Warren: 28-Sept.1997

Up again at 4am to fish at 6.30am.... just myself this time, 'cos Karen can't get up for two early morning starts in a row, bless her cotton socks!!!!!!!!......

Started at the far end of the second apron using a variety or Rapalas... J13 (blue/white) (black/white), HJ-14 (silver/blue), etc, and a weighted purple Redgill (trace of about 8 ft, looped back and nicked into the 1 or 1/2 oz swivel bomb lead for casting).....

Rising water, with high tide at about 10am, with the wind less than force 3.

No joy and I managed to lose the Redgill.

Moved off towards the Nags Head around 7-15am..... around 7-45am and using the HJ-14, missed a small fish of around a pound, that snapped at the plug and rolled away, just as I was lifting the lure out of the water!!!! Tried a variety of other Rapalas, but no joy....

About 9am, I noticed that the large flock of sea gulls that normally reside halfway along the lower apron, had become agitated, and were now wheeling and diving at the sea, and moving progressively towards my position. Decided that it was highly probable that it could be white-bait rising to the surface to avoid attacks by bass...... thus I decided to change my lure to a Rapala J9 (black and white) to imitate the bait fish that I thought the bass could be chasing..... cast out a few times to get used to the lighter weight, and then waited....

Suddenly the water started to boil, no more than a rod tips length away..... it was white-bait trying to avoid becoming breakfast, but being chased by mackerel, not bass...... thought crossed my mind that maybe the Bass would be after both the white bait and the mackerel, so I cast out...... thump..... 1 mackerel...... landed, bumped over the head, recast..... Bang, down goes the rod tip... this is no mackerel..... 3mins later, a nice bass comes towards the surface.... get the landing net ready, just about to net it and it dives again..... bring it back up, and it's got 3 other bass friends swimming along side it ...... formation bass ballet.... almost netted them all (would have been nice 4 for the price of 1, but it was not to be)..... landed the fish I'd hooked... 2 and 1/4 lb... photographed.. and kept for Nigel.

Cast out again, straight into an other mackerel... this one however caused me a little grief in removing the hook.... by the time I'd finished the shoal was moving off, and Tonys Mum and Dad had arrived on their bikes, with their spinning gear, and toby lures....

Changed over to a J14 (blue/white), hit home twice, but lost contact with both within seconds.... saw bass chasing the lure 3 or 4 times to the rod tip, but not hitting it... very frustrating....... changed retrieve strategy, by reeling and pausing every so often... then around 9.40am the rod tip went down ...... got the fish to the surface, but it still wanted to keep diving.... Margaret grabbed the landing net, and after a little maneuvering, I managed to draw the fish into the net..... weighed in at 2 and 3/4lb, photographed, and again kept for the pot....

Margaret and Peter swapped their tobys for Rapalas...... the mackerel returned a number of times, with the bass in hot pursuit..... Margaret took a mackerel on a black and white J9....... both the mackerel and bass chased the various lures I presented to them, but either failed to connect or didn't hit them...... went back to the J13 and cast out.... hit into something large, some way out, but before Margaret could get across to me with the landing net, the line dropped slack, and the fish was gone.....

A few more chasing but non hitting bass, and then around 10.40am, just as I was thinking about calling it a day.... wham..... in again... smaller fish, but still with a fighting spirit... landed, weighed in at 2lb, photographed, and returned ......

Packed up around 11.20am or so, the fish seeming to have gone and the sun breaking through the mist and cloud...... what a morning...... that's what I call fishing.....

Folkestone Warren 11th Oct.1997

Arrived at the Warren around 6am, walked down to the second apron, and started fishing just as the dawn was breaking and the sea was at High tide... around 6.30am....... a gentle wind from the NW (a little chilly), water a little clouded from the rough weather over the past week, although I could still see the lures.

I wanted to try out a few new Rapalas (along with a few oldies as well)...... J13's in blue and fire tiger, CDJ11's in blue and fire tiger, and the Rattlin Rap's in gold and fire tiger ...... ever get the feeling I've got something about fire tiger!!!!!!!!

Nothing......, not a flash, not a pull, not a bite....... Nothing!!!!!!!

Around 7am or so I was joined by Steve Burling, Steve having read the diary and been in touch via e-mail had decided to give it a whorl....... although we didn't make the connection until the end when we got chatting!!!!! Steve walked up towards the far (Dover) end of the second apron, flicking out a blue J13 as he went..... I continued at the Nags head, chopping and changing lures....... all to no avail......

Moved down to the first apron around 8.30am...... again no joy...... Steve came to join me flicking out across the lower apron as he came, and managed to get a soaking for his troubles....... Steve moved off around 10am giving it a few more tries as he went, off towards a couple who'd been fishing all night.. (Steve now tells me that they'd managed to bag a single sole..... maybe it was just one of those times when the fish just wouldn't bite!!!!!!!!)......

I went back to the Nags for half an hour, using the J13 fire tiger...... had what I thought was a tug, but who knows..... I really miss the sensitivity of the braid, maybe I'll try Tony's suggestion of a much stronger breaking strain and get a greater diameter, and yet still have the contact with the lure... we shall see!!!!!

Packed up around 10.30am, just driving out of Folkestone, and the rain starts to fall..... just wish one of us had caught a fish.........

Folkestone Warren 19th Oct.1997

Arrived at the Warren around 10.30am...... not an ideal time, but as the weather forecast was so good, I felt it was an opportunity not to miss..... I was prepared for a low catch rate but with the hope of enticing the "Big One".....

High water was around 1pm or so, with clear blue skies, a hazy mist and a wind of less than force 3......... The water was still warm, around 16 degrees, with a little weed, and some colour to it..

Started off by trying the rocks at the lower apron....... no joy, so I moved to the second high apron around 11.30am, as the tide had now come in sufficiently for me to be able to cast out in this area with out fear of losing the lures.

The main lures that I used, were the J13's in blue and firetiger, the J9's in the same, along with the CDJ11'S....

No joy around the second high apron, and at about 1pm the surf was overtopping the apron forcing me to move off....... so I walked down to the First apron and the buttresses, so I could cast along the wall where the bass sometimes patrol...... nothing.......

Around 2.30pm decided to move back towards the second high apron, casting out as I went...... just got to the last buttress, and I had a tug at the lure at last..... regrettably no hooking..... stayed a while with no further luck so I moved on...

Most of the second apron was still being swamped by the tide, so I moved to the far end to try the slipway / sandy area........ around 3pm I saw my first fish of the day, a small bass of around 1lb.... came straight after the J13, snapped at it as I was lifting it out the water....but it missed....... five minutes later the same thing happened although with a slightly larger fish.... very frustrating...... after some time and with no more contact, I moved back towards the Nags Head...... the water was relatively clear, I could see the lure, along with increasing numbers of bait fish..... but no sign of Bass........ then around 4.30pm, a small bass chased after the lure, but didn't strike home, just rolled over and dived away...... this happened on three other occasions, along with a couple of knocks.... but again no connection...... regardless of the size, or colour of the lures, indeed, my lures would seem to be the only thing to disturb the bait fish, but the runs at the lure were increasing as the sun got lower, unfortunately, both tide and time had beaten me, and I had to pack-up and go around 5.30pm...... oh well may get a chance next week when the tides are more favourable, but the weather may not!!!!!!!!!!

Folkestone Warren 23rd Oct.1997

Started fishing by myself around 3.30pm just at the point of high tide. The weather was fine, with cloud and sun, and a cold NE wind of force 4 or 5.....

Decided to plug even though the wind made life difficult, on the basis that the water had some colour, but I could still see the lure, and that a roughed-up surface could mean that the fish would rise..... The only other thing to say, was that a weed band about 20ft out was present.......

Used the J13's, and the Rattlin Raps........ needed the weight to cast the plugs out..... No joy........

Around 4.30pm I decided to change tactic, and try float fishing a whole squid, about 11ft down...... after about half an hour, and just when I was thinking of changing the bait, the float dived off at an acute angle.... I struck home..... the rod bent, felt like a medium sized fish of about 3lb, but no sooner had the thought crossed my mind....... the line dropped limp....... UUUUMMMMMM..

Nothing after this, so I tried with the plugs again until the light dropped.... decided to go back to the float, rather had to see the float, but I could feel it...... got snagged twice as the tide fell.... packed-up and drove home around 6.45pm......

From an e-mail Steve sent me... looks like he had even less joy the day before, and lost a lure as well!!!!!!!

Folkestone Warren 25th 0ct.1997

Started fishing around 3.30pm on the second high apron, really nice sunny day, very little wind, and with high tide around 6pm.

Started off using the J9's, as the rocks were still exposed and a shallow draft was required....... had one small tug and that was all...... swapped over to the J13's, but still no joy...... Young chap on a bike came and tried his luck on the far end with the slip-way, but he gave up after about an hour or so....!!!!!!

By 5.30pm and with nothing to show, I put a float rig together with a 6/0 pennell and mounted a whole squid.... still used the Rapala as well, just in case...... Nothing..... packed-up around 7pm, could see others fishing on the first apron, but I've no idea how they got on.

Think most of the bass have moved on now, and although I'm sure that a few large ones remain, it's going to be more a case of luck than judgment in finding them...... let the quest for Cod begin........

*** On a sad note, Mick's Tackle Corner, 2 Denmark Street, Folkestone. is closing down..... stock now being sold off at half price.... Mick hopes to be suppling just black lug in about 2 or 3 weeks time... will give details when I have them..... however, he did say that the local diggers would be asking more this year for Lug, something around 3ukp a score of black, which to you and me means a price tag of 4 to 4.50ukp in the shops....... think it maybe time to get a bait-pump!!!!!!

When I get a chance I'll sort these out.......
