Folkestone

Folkestone Warren 10th July 1999

Arrived at the Warren just after 4am .. and was immediately aware that the strength of the wind was some what stronger than the force 3, I had expected .... as the prevailing direction was from the N to NE, I decided to go down to the shore, in the hope that the cliffs would shelter us from the worst of the winds ... and so it proved to be, although on occasions the direction changed, and a difficult cross wind had to be contended with.... To make like just that little more difficult, there were patches of loose floating weed, and in general the water was less clear than the previous wednesday, and had taken on the hues of pea soap ..

I walked to the end of the second apron and down by the slipway ..... and tackled up with a Bass Bullet, in order to skim over the boulders and weed that lay beneath......

Just before 5am, Paul Davies showed up, sporting is new belly waders..... soon we were both in the water, casting out into the now advancing tide ... waiting for High water around 9.30am..... Paul saw a fish break surface.. thought it may have been a garfish ... we had a short break and a cup of coffee just after 6am...

By 6.30am we had started fishing off the short breakwaters on the second high apron using blue and white J9's .. which proved to be interesting with the combination of crosswind and weed ....

Not long after 7.30am we started using larger lures such as J13's etc ...... had a frustrating time, with shoals of mackerel breaking surface, and jumping into the air .. doing somersaults on occasions ... being chased by Bass one suspects ..... Great ... only problem is that they are about 3 or more cast lengths out of reach even using a long casting lure like a Krillette .... and that's about it ... no chasing fish for our lures, few bait fish, and the mackerel shoals staying out of reach along with the pursuing bass :-( .... had enough by 10 ish and decided to call it a day....

Spoke to Leon who fished the next day, and said that the LAS boys had a few small bass following lures, but no takers ... Leon had a Garfish .. and said that he'd been told that the mackerel had come into casting range with the evening tide on the Sat ... oh well always next time....
