Folkestone Warren 7th July 1999

Arrived down at the Warren around 3am .... there was a westerly wind blowing around force 3 .. high water was due sometime close to 5.30am .... so I made my way down to the second high apron and set up to plug for Bass.....

As the tide had already risen to a depth where I could use a J13 Rapala .. that's what I decided to use .......

The crosswind made things a little awkward to start with, but as the morning wore on so it eased..... there was a small amount of weed but not really a problem .... the water was moderately clear....

First calamity occurred around 4.00am .. managed to get the braid hooked up on part of the reel during casting .. and it cut/snapped it ... and so I lost a J13 as a result ... it was too dark to see where it had gone, and despite keeping an eye open for it during the rest of my time, I failed to find it....

I used a Deebee for a while, followed by a Bass Bullet, and then chopped and changed between another J13 and a Krillet .......

I almost had a coronary around 5.15am .. I was so busy watching the water for signs of activity around my lure as I retrieved it, that I virtually jumped out of my skin when all of a sudden no more then 25 ft in front of me, a seal suddenly broke surface .... bobbed up and down and looked at me and then dived .... decided it was time for a coffee .... and waited for the seal to move off.. which it did.....

5.45am ... bang .. a fish hit the plug .. but failed to connect with the hooks :-(

5.55am .. cast out, and my top rod section went out to sea as well!!!! .. got it back.. :-)

I could see small bait fish jumping out of the way of my lure, but nothing in terms of predatory fish action....

6.30am .... another hit on the plug, but again failed to connect.... :-(

By 8am, I'd had enough, and decided it was time to go back and drive to the Uni for an Exam Board meeting..... I wish it was possible to fish everyday before work .... how civilised that would be .. oh well can but dream... ;-)
