FOLKESTONE

Folkestone Pier 22nd Aug.1997

Started fishing (Tony, Karen and myself) around 7pm on the Elbow, very few others fishing the pier (max 6). Caught 15 odd mackerel (for bait and my mums freezer) between 7-8.30pm on feathers, best of which was 1lb . Fished with ledgers (2 hooks (sizes 2 to 2/O)) after that using a variety of baits: Blow lug, black lug, crab, clam, and mackerel. Number of small pout and a silver eel, all under size.

Tried fishing down the wall, but nothing doing... no pout at all. As a result decided that it would be worth setting up for Bass down the wall with free lined live pout and mackerel strips around 10pm. The Chaps fishing next to us had the same idea (sorry I didn't get your names) using dead pout on a fixed leger with 5/0 hooks on a Pennell rig. Bang..... after some hard work and a little help from Tony with their drop net, they had one lovely 6lb Bass. I can safely say that the three of us looked on with envy in our eyes!!!!

The tidal run soon kicked in and fishing down the wall was a non-starter. Fishing out also started to drop off with just the occasional small pout. Managed to slice the top of my finger open with the filleting knife.... thanks to the Bass Man for the insulation tape and the bandaging. Decided to call it a night around 2.30 am ,too much weed, crabs and tidal run.
