Tide: HW 11.00pm
Weather Forecast: NW3 Fine and dry

Arrived with Chris around 5.00pm and decided to look the venue over with the low tide….. before we started fishing for mullet…

With the prevailing NW wind we elected to fish on the southern lee side … but as the water was so low, actually started on the rock platform below….

Before we could start I broke up a couple of medium sliced loaves and mixed them into half a bucket of water….. and further worked with my fingers to aid its disintegration.. and then flicked out at periodic intervals about 20 to 30 ft with the aid of the long handled serving spoon….. The main problem encountered was the strong tidal flow which rapidly drew the bread suspension towards the left, and thus away from where we could fish, and so we were forced to trot the floats as best we could in the same general direction, making bite detection ever more hard, and possibly any subsequent strike ineffectual… :-(

Set up with a 2.5 swan waggler set at about 6 to 7ft above the 20” flurocarbon hook length with its size 10 painted kamazan B983, and baited with bread flake…

Started fishing around 6.30pm ….. but nothing to report either in terms of bites, or even fish seen… and the tide started to come in rapidly so we moved off the rocks onto the pier structure itself, but not before I almost coated my self in bread slop as I passed the bucket up onto the wall .. much to the amusement of Chris!!!!

7.30pm … the float suddenly went under and awoke me from my some what hypnotic state from watching it bobbing up and down, struck and felt some resistance, of the fishy variety, but only a small fish …. Brought it to the surface … a shanny …. I was starting to think that I was doomed to catching only blennies rather than elusive mullet on the rest of my trip!!!!

Chris had a number of bites on his tackle, but as he failed to connect can’t really say what they were!!!!

8.20pm… managed to get hung-up on one of the submerging reefs, but pulled myself clear …. Not that easy with razor sharp rocks and 7 to 5lb line!!!!

A small cormorant took a liking to us and seated itself just below were we were fishing , and begged to be fed …. Didn’t like the bread offerings at hand, and seemed most put out they we could offer no fish tit-bits!!!!!

By 9pm the light was rapidly failing, and we decided to call it a day, and whilst there were no mullet to be had, it was all valuable experience for me, especially in terms of getting used to the lighter tackle…..
