Beau Port 15th Aug 2000
GR: 578,476

Decided to try for some black bream at Beau Port, so I drove over to St Helier and collected Chris.... we needed some worm baits to supplement our supply of squid, so went over to Gouray and dug some lugworm around 4.30pm.......

Having dug the worms we then setoff for Beau Port.... things looked good with high water due around 8pm (10.1m), and with a forecast for light southerly winds and occasional scattered showers.....

Parked at the top of Beau Port, and then walked across to the western side and down the cliffs to the rock platforms, so that we could cast straight into the sandy bay.....

quite a climb down, and I wasn't looking forward to the climb back up, with all the gear I'd brought along!!!!!

Anyway set-up to start fishing around 6pm..... I put two main rods out.. one with a 2/0 wishbone, the other a 3 hook (1/0's) flapper, both loaded with lug and squid combo's. Once that was done I decided to see if there were any fish under our feet so used the bass rod with a 1oz lead and a 1/0 hook flapper straight down ... tried a variety of things such a squid, lug and salted mackerel......

6.50pm..... managed to hook a small wrasse of about 8" on lug, using the bass rod....... but otherwise it was all very quiet.....

Decided to try plugging with the bass rod... not easy as the lure kept picking up floating weed.....

8.00pm ..... had a solid tug on the slither, and pulled up a 12" pollack ......

After this the combination of floating weed and poor light really put pay to the plugging, to I packed the bass rod away and focused on the two main rods..... everything was very quiet for both Chris and myself.....

9.15pm ..... I went over to one of the rods to tighten the line a fraction .... and a split second before my hand touched it, the ratchet on the reel started to scream, as something shot off out to sea..... grabbed the rod, and adjusted the drag.... knew I had a reasonable fish on the other end, by the way it was kicking...... within a few minutes I'd got the fish to the surface , helped by the fact that the fish had started to swim towards me.... looked like a nice black bream.. which then started making desperate zigzag runs... after a few more minutes managed to bring it in and land it..... yup, one nice black bream of 14", and just a shade under 2lb :-).

9.37pm... having rebaited and cast out again, I brought in the other rod to rebait.. I'd just started to do so, when the other rod started to scream again.... dropped what I was doing, and grabbed the rod ..... another fighting fish.... came in quite easily, again swimming towards me, until it hit the surface, and again went through a series of zigzag runs..... so I knew it was a bream even before I'd seen it...... managed to bring it up and land it... small this time at just over 12", and about 1.1/2lb.....

9.38pm .... as all this is going on, Chris manages to bring in a nice sole of 13" and weighing just over 1/2lb.....

9.45pm.... had a series of pouting bites, and landed a pair of pouts ... 8" and 9"....

10.25pm...... One of Chris's reels starts to scream ..... brought in the fish.... another black bream, this time around 11.5"........

11.00pm.... another pouting to me...... all 11" of it......

Things then went back to being very quiet, and by 11.30pm we'd had enough and the water was really too low to continue, so we packed up and climbed back up the cliff back to the car..... by the time we reached to top, both of us were physical wrecks!!!!!!!
