Beauport 22nd Aug 2001

Map Ref: 578,476
Tide: HW 10.00pm (11.5m)
Weather Forecast: Fair with a westerly wind F3/4

Having fished at Fort D'Auvergne that morning, we went back to Chis’s place and grabbed some lunch, then straight off to Gorey to dig enough lugworm for the evening .. having done so, we then went and looked at some of the promising gullies around Le Hocq, really for future reference, with a mind to plugging for bass …. Just got to be VERY careful of the incoming tide, with comes in at the rate of knots and easily cuts you off if your not careful …..

Anyway, with the time moving on, it was a bit of a rush to get back over to St Brelade’s, change, grab my ground fishing gear, and race down to Beauport for 7pm…..
Walked / scrambled down the cliffs, arrived and took a breather to look around, set up, and start fishing the incoming tide around 8.00pm….

Decided to go with two Wessex ledgers with 1/0 hooks, baited with a lug/squid combo on the top hook, and just lug on the bottom…. Really just about did it in time, as darkness fell quickly, and we had the lights on by 8.30pm….

9.35pm …. Pulled up a 10” pouting that fell to the lug and squid combo….

9.40pm … Chris pulls up a pouting as well … 6”…

The rising tide starts to create a large amount of spray, that gives Chris, who’s fishing the lower platform, a hard time…..

9.50pm …. Pull up another pouting , this time 11”, and again on the lug/squid combo from the top hook…..
During this time, the whole Island plunges into darkness …. People on the otherside of the bay come out with search lights .. great, just when I’m dealing with a call from nature .. very thoughtful of them to help me take a true a proper aim, rather than pot luck in the darkness!!!!!

10.05pm …. Funs over and the lights on the otherside come back on ..learnt later that a substation on Guernsey had blow… something about shared power supplies between the islands…

10.10pm …. Chris pulls up a 10” pouting….

10.12pm .. get a rattling good bite on one of the rods ….. find that a 23”dogfish has taken my offering of lug and white ragworm on the lower hook……

10.20pm…. pull up another 11” pouting, again on lug and squid from the top hook….

Things then went very quiet, and by 11.45pm, we start getting the DOOM feeling and so begin to pack up….

11.50pm… just as we are packing away.. Chris gets a bite, and the fish runs with the tackle, making his ratchet sing….. turns out to be a dogfish …… but by know we are ready to go … and so we finish packing away, and start the LONG climb back up the cliff to the car….
