Belcroute / Le But 13th Aug 2001

Map Ref: 610,476
Tide: LW 7.15am (3.9m) neap
Weather Forecast: Dry and Sunny with a Westerly wind F3 to 4

Drove over and collected Chris around 4.15am, and then promptly drove back to Belcroute … parked up on the side of the slipway, and sorted out the gear …. It was fairly apparent even in the half light that we were a little early, and that the tide had yet to drop sufficiently to allow us safe passage across the boulders and rocks to Le But .. such is the joy of neap tides!!!!!

So we waited, and by about 5.15am or so we picked our way across the rocks as the water ebbed away, and the light was sufficient to see where we were going….. arrived at Le But and set-up to fish by 5.30am or so…. Started off using a J13, but was soon forced to swap it for a J9 with the shallowing of the water depth….

It was apparent from the start that the water was almost alive with small baitfish.. and every so often surface splashes could be seen, giving away some sort of predatory behaviour …..

5.50am .. Chris gives a shout .. a fish had hit the lure .. shot off in the opposite direction, and the fish and lure, had parted company from his line.. looked like the knot holding the lure may have given under the impact / force of the initial strike … Chris was not best pleased!!!! :-(

6.30am … and another angler joined us ,,, and started spinning …. Came over a little later and said the fishing had been better with the spring tides, and that the bass seemed to go off the feed by about 8am or so, with so much whitebait in the water .. a very similar story to one I’d been told in JFS Sport a few days earlier….

6.35am… something snatched at the J9 .. but I missed it :-(

6.45am …. And we spot a number of Turns, wheeling and diving into the water well out of casting range.. very frustrating……

By about 7.30am things had gone very quiet, with little or no surface activity, and the other angler had left……

We persisted until around 9.00am, but with no joy, and as the tide was starting to come back in, we decided that we’d had enough .. but it did afford us the opportunity to have a close look around the Belcroute bay itself, with a mind to a possible excursion in the future….
