Fort D'Auvergne 21st Aug 2001

Map Ref: 656,477
Tide: HW 9.00am (11.6m)
Weather Forecast: Bright with a southerly F3/4 wind

Picked Chris up just after 6.00am, drove down, parked and walked to the rock, so that we were tackled up and fishing by 7.00am….. just in time for the incoming tide…….

With the advancing tide and continued groundbaiting, it wasn’t long before the shadowy grey shapes belonging to a couple of inquisitive mullet could be seen just within casting range…..

7.15am …. Chris gives a shout ….. he’s in ….. the fish gives him the run around, pulling this way, and then that way, but soon he has it under control and on the surface …. I scrabbled down, and Chris passed the landing net …. Soon brought it around, and I managed to net it for him .. passed the long net handle up, and followed him to the top of the rock ….. 16” golden grey mullet of around 1.1/2lb, took a picture, and let Chris pop it back….

Not long after this the wind slowly started to pick up from the East, to force 3 or 4, making the sea rather choppy, and fishing rather difficult …. However we could clearly see that all around the rock, right up to our feet were loads of very small mullet…..

8.25am …. Well not proud of it, but it was bound to happen … yes I managed to land a 5” mullet!!!!

8.40am … Chris also lands a 5”mullet …. Strange …. Really couldn’t tell from the bite, looked just like one from a 3lb’er …. And to think we were using size 10 hooks to catch large mullet, and yet with the same size hook easily catch a 5” minnow!!!!

Wind changes to blow from the south, again towards F4, making the sea even more choppy ……

9.25am …. Wind pushes the float over the rocks to the right, and before I know it, I’m snagged …. Unfortunately the line snaps, and I loose everything…. Have to waste time tackling up all over again…..

Things go very quiet, and not helped by the fact that we can’t see any fish due to the chop…..

11.20am …. Float goes down and I hit it straight away … hook a fish, but it’s very small .. indeed turns out to be an 8” golden grey mullet!!!

By 11.40am the water is too shallow to continue, and so we call it a day and pack up…..
