St Catherine's Breakwater 20th Aug 2000
GR: 720,529

We decided to give the breakwater another go... this was going to be our last chance to fish before returning to the mainland, and felt like fishing an easy venue, rather than rock-hopping or cliff climbing.......

High water was due around 11pm, with reasonable weather and a NW wind around force 3 or so.... arrived a little later than we'd planned around 7.30pm ...... there were a couple of people feathering from the end, who managed to pull up a couple of mackerel and some scad for their efforts.... also fishing there was a chap we'd met on a previous occasion at Bonne Nuit .... he'd fished that afternoon over low water and out towards the sand banks to the south... managed to catch a couple of dog fish .. plus a nice thornback of 9lb!!!!!! Things were looking good... or so we hoped.....

Set up the gear .... principally ground fishing with squid, although we also had garfish, sandeel, ragworm and lugworm at our disposal, as we saw fit.......

Well to cut a long story short... we didn't do very well ..... the tidal run was strong, but that in itself would perhaps not have been a problem with the 8oz grap leads we had...... the real trouble was caused by the shear volume of floating weed... either resulting in huge amounts of effort to bring the line back, of being washed into a snag........ think I must have lost at least 5 sets of gear, principally to the rocky snags right at the end of the breakwater for this reason!!!! Karen and Chris managed better as they were able to fish in the slack water to the left ... with hindsight it would have been better for me to have given up at the end, and fished off the back wall......... anyway what fish we did catch are listed below.....

8.50pm... Karen had a 10" pout.....

10.20pm.... Karen has another pouting..... all 9" of it.....

12.05am ..... managed to catch a dogfish....... of about 24" or so.....

1.20am..... another fish to me...... 15" pollack......

1.30am..... Karen has a 12" pouting........

Had enough by 2am.... packed up and walked back to the car........
