Identification:
This right-sided flatfish has a smooth upper surface. Colouration is brownish with darker blotches, and the lateral line is straight with only a slight curve above the pectoral fin. The head and mouth are both very small.

Breeding:
Spawning occurs in about 100 m of water during April - August. The young become bottom-living at about 3 cm, and reach maturity at 3-4 years.

Habitat:
Typically found on hard or gravelly bottoms, at 20-150 m.

Food:
They feed on small invertebrates, such as worms, sandhoppers and barnacles.

Range:
Occurs throughout UK waters.
