Sandgate and Hythe

Seabrook (Battery Point) 28th Aug.2000

Decided to give this potential low water mark a try out, whilst I had the time spare ..... drove down for first light around 5.30am, which gave me just enough time to work out where to fish on the boulder groin in front of the car park, and set up my spinning gear before low water which was due around 6am.

I decided to cast towards the east, ie towards sandgate as the prevailing wind was from the SW force 3 to 4 whilst calm at other times, and with it the odd shower thrown in to boot.......

The rocks/boulders of the groin were covered in slippery slime and weed, but made accessible with the large amounts of mussels/barnicles giving grip under foot ..... found a nice spot about half way along that a) allowed a stable platform to cast from and b) offered the opportunity to be able to land a fish if I was to be so fortunate .... I have to say here and now that a long handled landing net looks to be essential unless you really have a deathwish to scramble and slip on the lower weed covered rocks!!!!

Not long after I'd started to work my J13, I was joined by another chap that had come down for some plugging....... I should point out that the bottom here is a mixture of shingle, loose sand/mud, and rocks..... with the storms that had occurred over the previous few days the sand/mud had turned the waters almost into a brown soup ...... but I was hoping that the fish could home into the vibration of the plug........

Not long after this, another chap joined us and started fishing off the end, both feathering and groundfishing......

Being in the lee of the wind, the water was reasonably still..... and by 7am, and not having had a tug, seen any surface activity, the state of the water, and a similar lack of hits by my two companions, I decided to leave them to it and head off to the Warren and fish the rising tide.........
